Why Your Wedding and Stress Shouldn’t Go Hand in Hand

Stress.  It is a body’s reaction to certain events – to face an upcoming problem or to deal with a tough situation.  You start experiencing a faster heart and breathing rate, blood pressure, and metabolism; muscles tend to be more alert; sweat cools down the body; pupils dilate; glucose is released to boost energy… this is how the body copes to perform better under pressure.  But while a stress reaction is excellent during emergency situations, long-term stress or excess stress is not good.

Stress overload, while looking forward to your upcoming wedding, is not going to help.  The demand of having things just “perfect” can push you to the end, and you could miss great opportunities like getting the right-priced gown, or the best inexpensive wedding favors, or the finest yet affordable flower arrangement deal.  Instead of feeling enthusiastic about the wedding, you could become stressed out and moody, feel sad or depressed, have panic attacks, have difficulty sleeping, and you might develop physical symptoms such as stomachaches and headaches, as well as allergic reactions.  This is not good for the bride- or groom-to-be.

If you feel that you’re getting stressed out, then you had better learn to de-stress:

·Relax.  Do basic routines to activate your relaxation response, the antidote to the body’s stress response. Go to the spa.  Have a manicure and pedicure.  Soak in the tub.  Breathe.

·Pull back.  Instead of staying in the thick of things, look at the wedding preparations from a different perspective.

·Pinpoint the stress factors.  If you’re concerned about the expenses, for example, then you might consider going for a less costly menu, cheap wedding favors, a less elaborate wedding gown, etc.

·Eat right.  Rather than digging in to junk or fast food, give attention to fruits and vegetables.  This is the time that your body can employ an extra helping of vitamins and minerals.

·Get active.  Exercise is a great way to handle stress.  So take a walk on the beach or have a swim.  Get some physical activity that has nothing to do with the wedding.

·Also, you might consider asking for help from your friends.  Definitely, they would be more than happy to help you get better solutions to your worries.  They might recommend a more practical venue, or they can maybe help you make wedding favors under 1.00, or put together a unique wedding theme.

If you feel pressured, ask people to help you cope.  Weddings are supposed to be fun and special.  Don’t let stress destroy it.
